Upcoming Events:

We are in the planning stages of
several exciting events for Spring quarter including a tour of the M1A1
Abrams Tank facility in Lima and weekly documentary showings. If you
are interested in these sorts of events, please e-mail me a schedule of your
availability next quarter so we can plan these events appropriately.
Good luck on finals and have a fantastic spring break!
Thanks, Tim Leger (AIAA Student
President)
Past events for
2005-2006 academic year:
-
On Friday May 26th, the student
chapter of AIAA went on a tour of the Motoman facility in West Carrollton.
The tour began with a demonstration of several industrial robots, most used
for automated welding. The tour then continued through their development and
production areas. We were then given the opportunity to try programming a
simple robot in one of the Motoman training labs. Everyone who attended the
tour enjoyed it greatly and we hope to hold another tour during the Fall
quarter to another engineering facility in the local Dayton area.
Special thanks go to Mary Kay and Thy from Motoman for escorting us through
the facility and teaching us how to program the robots.

During the weekend of April 20-22nd,
AIAA held it's region III student conference at Ohio State University.
Several students from Wright State University competed in this conference
and won, congratulations guys!

To continue our Documentary Nights
event, AIAA has been showing aviation related documentaries on Mondays in
145 Russ from 6:30 ~ 8:30 PM. Past documentaries include "Battle of
the X-planes", "SR71 Blackbird", & the 5 part series "21st Century Jet, the
Building of the 777". Keep checking our main page for schedule updates
and if you have suggestions for aircraft, topics, or particular titles you
would like to see, please let me know via email at
tleger@cs.wright.edu, Thanks!

As part of a new event, AIAA showed
the NOVA documentary "Battle of the X-planes" about the development of the
Joint Strike Fighter on April 12 at 6:30 PM in 145 Russ. Turnout for
this event was good and popcorn & pop were provided for those that attended.
We are still in the process of planning out the rest of these events, so if
you have suggestions for aircraft, topics, or particular titles you would
like to see, please let me know via email at
tleger@cs.wright.edu, Thanks!

We held our first meeting Spring
quarter Wednesday April 5 at 7:30 PM n 145 Russ. Pizza and pop were
made available to those that attended. A copy of the agenda from this
meeting in PDF format can be downloaded
here.
-
AIAA participated in the Student
Organization Club Fair held in the Hearth Lounge, Friday March 3rd from 1 -
3 PM. Turnout was low, but we had a good time representing our
organization and getting to know other student organizations on campus.
-
AIAA participated in the Subway
Social in Hamilton Hall Feb.28 from 4 - 6 PM. The event was designed
to give engineering students of Hamilton Hall the opportunity to engage in
friendly dialogue with faculty and staff members from the College of
Engineering and Computer Science and to meet with campus engineering
organizations. Turnout was light, but we did manage to interest a few
students in our club.
-
AIAA hosted movie night Friday, Feb.
24 at ~5:30 PM in 144 Russ to conclude National Engineering Week.
Apollo 13 was shown with popcorn provided by the EE department.
-
Dr. James Walker, an AIAA
Distinguished Guest Lecturer, gave a presentation on his
vast work experience at the South West Research Institute (SWRI) on Tuesday,
Feb. 21 at 3 PM in 145 Russ. Dr. Walker was awarded the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers 2005 Holley Medal for his efforts in the Columbia Space
Shuttle Accident Investigation team. In October 2004, he was included
in Popular Science's third annual "Brilliant 10", a list of the top
scientist to watch in the future. His presentation was extremely
interesting and covered his work as part of the Columbia Space Shuttle
Accident Investigation Team. In particular, his team of engineers
developed new computational models to simulate the impact of foam from the
shuttle's external tank on both the ceramic tiles and reinforced carbon
carbon (RCC) which make up the leading edge of the shuttle's wing.
Numerous details about the Shuttle's construction that are not readily know
by the public were given. In addition, his team modeled and tested the
impact of woven thermal blanket material impacting into the cermaic tiles
which cover the shuttle's rear engine nacells. their conclusions of
the thermal blanket material destroying the tiles is not at first obvious,
but was backed up with experimental studies his team also performed.
To finish his visit, Dr. Walker entertained questions and comments about his
work and the future of both the Shuttle program and future exploration of
space. We look forward to having Dr. Walker back at the university in
the future to give another outstanding presentation.
-
AIAA participated in the CECS club
fair held in the Russ Atrium on Monday, Feb. 20 as part of National
Engineering Week (E-week). We displayed our new club table banner and
had a flight simulator program for those that stopped by our table.
Turnout for this event was good and we managed to interest several students
in becoming AIAA student members. In addition, we won third place for
best club table (a $25 award). Thanks go out to Karleine Justice and Sudhakar
Mahalingam for manning the table.
-
AIAA in conjunction with ASME and SWE
went on a tour of the Goodrich Aircraft Brake Assembly Plant in Troy on Feb.
10 from 4 - 6 PM. We had a great turnout for this event with 32
students and 2 faculty members. The tour began in the Goodrich
cafeteria, where subs, chips, cookies, and pop were provided while some of their
engineers presented what they do at the plant. Following the
presentations, groups of 5 were escorted through the factory floor to see
the various brake assembly components being machined along with touring the
test chambers where Goodrich test their brake assemblies
thoroughly (sometimes to destruction). Everyone on the tour had a great time
and we are planning to do this tour again in the future. Goodrich also
has several entry level position open, please email me at
tleger@cs.wright.edu if our
interested. If you have an idea for a plant tour or field trip, please let
us know!
-
AIAA held a joint meeting with ASME on January 12,
2006 to discuss club events for National Engineering Week (Feb. 20-24).
Pizza and pop were made available to all that showed up. Other issues
were also brought up including selection of a guest speaker for the College
Seminar Series, holding a spring quarter outdoor engineering competition,
and doing a field trip to a facility like GE or Motoman. A copy of the
agenda from this meeting in MS Word format can be downloaded
here.
-
The Resume Building Workshop on November 5 was not
as big an event as had been anticipated. Although over 80 students
signed up to attend the workshop, only ~30 actually showed up.
However, we did manage to get a few students interested in joining AIAA.
-
The student chapter of AIAA held it's first meeting
this quarter on October 28, 2005. Free pizza and soda were provided
for those that came. Attendance and interest in sponsoring activities
this year was great and we're looking forward to a fantastic academic year
for our organization. Our university is named after two individuals
who devoted their lives to aviation, so lets get out there and show our
pride in our profession! A copy of the agenda for the meeting in MS
Word format can be download here.

Opportunities for new
events:
-
Interested in having a competition,
contest, or event related to engineering, let us know! As an official
university club, we can reserve rooms campus wide, help out with volunteers,
and have access to funds for such events. We are especially interested
in sponsoring events for National Engineering Week, February 20 - 24, 2006.
Just e-mail you're ideas to Tim Leger
(tleger@cs.wright.edu) or Dr. Menart
(jmenart@cs.wright.edu), Thanks!
