The American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics (AIAA) is a Professional Society committed to advancing the art, science, and technology of aeronautics & astronautics.  AIAA encourages original research, furthers dissemination of knowledge, fosters the professional development of those engaged in scientific and engineering activities, improves public understanding of the profession and its contributions, fosters education in engineering and science as well as other professional groups, and stimulates outstanding professional accomplishments.  As a student chapter of AIAA, our goal is to foster interest in the areas of aeronautics and astronautics, and to providing an avenue of communication between its members and the professional Aerospace industry.

Facebook is free to join and is a great way to network with other students and clubs at Wright State University.

  • 4th Annual Dayton Engineering Sciences Symposium - The 4th Annual Dayton Engineering Sciences Symposium is scheduled for 27 October 2008 at Wright State University.  .  Sponsored by the Dayton Section of ASME, the symposium is designed to facilitate communication between members of the regional technical community, as well as to provide a forum for students, both undergraduate and graduate, and researchers/practitioners to present their work.  The symposium program will include several parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon, a luncheon, an industry exhibition, and a Keynote Address.  Presentations are limited to 20 minutes, including time for questions.  No written paper is required.  The Dayton Section of ASME will confer “Best Presentation” awards at the annual Section Awards Banquet in late Spring, 2009.  Abstract submission is now open and are being solicited in all areas of engineering science. Specific topic areas are expected to include: Applied Engineering; Biomechanics; Computer Engineering; Controls Science; Design & Optimization; Electronics & Sensors; Engineering Education; Fluid Mechanics; Industrial & Human Factors; Materials & Processing; Nanotechnology; Power, Propulsion, & Energy Systems; Structures & Solid Mechanics; Thermal Sciences; Engineering Innovation; and Undergraduate Design Projects.  Abstract Submissions are limited to 150 words, and must be submitted online through the conference web site, http://www.cs.wright.edu/~asme/DESS.htm , which contains all details of the symposium.

  • Wings & Things Lecture Series: The Air Force Museum, Carney Auditorium.  Museum doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission & parking is free:

Sept. 16, 2008: Mr. Adrian Cronauer
"Accounting For America's Missing Heroes"
Former U.S. Air Force sergeant Adrian Cronauer co-authored the original story for the major motion picture, Good Morning, Vietnam! In that film, Cronauer was portrayed--loosely--by Robin Williams whose performance was nominated for an Academy Award. A subsequent special program on National Public Radio about the role of military radio in Vietnam earned Cronauer a 1992 Ohio State Award and two 1991 Gold Medals from the New York Radio Festival.

Nov. 19, 2008: Mr. Sean Moulton
"Challenges of the Next Generation Unmanned Aircraft System"
Mr. Sean "Skipper" Moulton grew up in Montgomery, Alabama and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1983. He entered the U.S. Air Force Academy in June of 1983 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management in 1987. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant.

  • 33rd Dayton Cincinnati Aerospace Sympossium - The Dayton-Cincinnati Section of AIAA held the 33rd Annual Dayton-Cincinnati Aerospace Sciences Symposium on Tuesday 4 March 2008 at the Dayton Mall Holiday Inn.  The symposium program included twelve parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon, covering a wide range of aerospace-related technical disciplines.  This is the premier annual event for regional aerospace research and is designed to foster technical interchange between academic, government, and industry communities.  Thanks to all that made this event happen and we hope to see you at the symposium next year with a submission!

  • Robert Gilliland at the Nutter Center: Robert Gilliland, test pilot for the SR-71 Blackbird, gave an presentation on his experiences as a test pilot in the Berry room of the Nutter Center on May 7th.  He recounted several interesting and entertaining stories related to history and heritage of aviation.  This event was partially sponsored by the Dayton-Cincinnati section of AIAA

  • GE Aircraft Learning Centre Tour: As part of E-week, AIAA and ASME arranged a tour of the GE Learning Centre in Evendale, just outside the GE Aircraft Engine Plant, on Friday Feb. 23.  Below is a group photo in front the enormous GE-90 (this engine is over 10 feet in diameter!):

Upon return from the tour, ASME and AIAA held a pizza party in 145 Russ with a showing of the documentary IMAX: Stormchasers.  Judging by the number of students, this was the largest and most attended event during E-week.

We are already in the planning phases for a similar tour of the Tank plant in Lima for next quarter, so if you are interested in these sorts of activities but want to make sure you can attend, please send us an email with your availability for next quarter so we can plan around it.
