Operation:
YOU MUST HAVE THE ANTENNA CONNECTED BEFORE TURNING THE UNIT ON! YOU CAN BLOW THE UNIT IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS!
Do NOT use high power. Stay on medium. If you see an H alone on the screen, you are about to blow a fuse in your car. Select the side with the H (push the left or right small dials to select the correct side) and hit the LOW button until the H becomes an M.
There is a cord that looks like it has a headphone jack on each end. THE ENDS ARE NOT THE SAME! One end has more black stripes than the other. The end with more black stripes goes in the VMC plug of the AVMap. The other end goes in the 710 head (plug is labelled GPS or VNC). For the 700, this plug may be on the body of the radio. I don't recall as I'm writing this.
You have a number of buttons across both sides and the bottom labeled) and one big dial (for tuning, and selecting), and two volume/squelch knob pairs (on the right). Pushing the buttons on the right is [band select]
Make sure you are in dual band mode (if not, push volume knob [far right knob] and hold for at least 1 second until you see 2 frequencies)
Make sure both left and right are in the 2 meter band (~mid 100s MHz). (F-Band select repeatedly for the left or right side as necessary). (F means the F button)
Keep both sides in VFO mode (hit the VFO button)
APRS Setup
Left Band-select (no F button) and tune to 144.390. Turn the volume to 50% (line up) (right volume off), and adjust the squelch so it is just beyond the level where you hear noise. If you don’t hear background noise, hit the TNC button and adjust the squelch again. If the squelch is wrong, you will not be able to broadcast on APRS. Once squelch is adjusted, press TNC. You should see APRS or similar over the left display once the TNC has started up.
Now you should receive modem sounds, and they your radio should give a satisfying beep when it interprets the data. You can turn the volume (NOT THE SQUELCH), off now.
Speaking
Right band-select. Turn the volume up to 50%, adjust the squelch the same way as before.
Choose your frequency.
If necessary, select “tone” until a lone “T” appears over the right display. Repeat until you only have a “T”.
F-T.Sel (the menu will change when you hit F so the T.Sel shows on the bottom). Use the left dial you choose frequency and push it to set it.
Reading APRS (Location) DATA:
Hit the Key button.
You can select an APRS station with the dial on the left (push to choose). You should see a range (miles) and compass heading to that station in the bottom right. You should see other interesting but less useful information. There are two arrows at the bottom of the screen <- & ->. If only the altitude is displayed click the right arrow button to view rang, speed, and heading. And again to view the exact coordinates of the balloon or vehicle
You have a menu on the bottom. Use the menu to see different information.
