The Wright State University Amateur Radio Club is an outgrowth of the High Altitude Balloon Team due the predominance of ham operators in the club. This is a result of the significant usage of ham radio digital communications for tracking, communicating, and controlling launches. It was founded in April, 2008, and officially recognized on Sept. 16, 2008 by the FCC with the call sign KD8JHK (no longer valid). On 10/15/2008, the club was awarded the vanity cal sign W1WSU.

Meetings precede the first balloon team meeting of each month by 15 minutes unless otherwise announced in advance (no less than one week notice for an official meeting). Voting and discussion of issues can be conducted by email at the discretion of the president.
