We have a openings for interns/co-ops in our LexisNexis Global Solutions Development – User Experience group. If you have any interested students, please have them contact June Doyal, june.doyal@lexisnexis.com  (937) 865-6800 ext. 56302) as soon as possible. We are targeting hiring interns in May or June to coincide with the end of the current academic term, but could begin earlier.
A User Experience Intern/Co-op will design and document user interfaces for the Web-based products. User interface design experience is preferred. Candidates should be enrolled in a Human Factors Engineering,  Human Factors Psychology (or related discipline) program of study. M.A./M.S. or Ph.D. level preferred.
Responsibilities include:
* Work as a member of project teams including product managers and software engineers, to create information retrieval products for the Web.
* Create user interface designs, prototypes, and specification documents.
* Conduct usability tests and provide design recommendations based on test results.
About the internship program at LexisNexis:

  • Part time. Interns are expected to work between 20 and 30 hours per week. Within those guidelines, they have flexibility as to how many hours they work, and when.  The program is conceived to run concurrently with enrollment in the graduate school.
  • The success of our program depends on the good will of the faculty of participating universities.  Therefore, work hours and projects for interns are flexible. We realize that there will be weeks with fewer hours than others. That is fine (within reason), as long as the average number of hours falls within the general guidelines.
  • No hard end-date.  Because of the time it takes people to learn our products well enough to meaningfully contribute, interns typically work at LexisNexis for at least a year.  Frequently, students work for several years until they finish their degree. Note that there is no guarantee of continued employment. As with most corporations, employment can be terminated at any time.  However, this is rarely an issue in the internship program.
  • Fit: We give preference to students with an interest and experience in HCI, especially web interface design and usability.  However, even if the student's main interests lie outside of these broad areas, an internship with our group may still be mutually beneficial.  The benefits of industry experience are not limited to a specific content area or technology.

About LexisNexis:
LexisNexis, a Division of Reed Elsevier plc group, is the acknowledged leader in the electronic publishing industry providing computerized research services to professionals in the legal profession, government agencies, major firms and corporations. United States Postal Service

Operations Industrial Engineers UPDATE!

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has always been a leader in the use of Industrial
Engineers in operations, engineering, logistics and Headquarters functions. We have embarked on a major expansion of our Industrial Engineering resources. This expansion is called the Operations Industrial Engineer (OIE) Initiative. Its objective is to expand our foundation of industrial
engineering resources in support of our standardization and continuous improvement efforts. Our target is to hire over 150 Industrial Engineers in 90 distribution facilities nationwide in the spring of 2008. There are also industrial engineering positions available in other functions of our network operations. This is a fantastic opportunity for industrial engineers to help shape the future of USPS operations.

OIE’s will work with our plant operations managers to develop and implement process changes to improve service, cost and equipment performance. OIE’s will focus on mail flow improvements from collection to processing to delivery, through the direct application of industrial engineering, Lean Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies. OIE’s will have the responsibility to directly implement operational changes as a key member of the plant management structure. OIE’s will lead improvement projects that cover mail flows, equipment performance, employee scheduling and staffing, production planning and control, workroom floor layout, methods improvements and value stream mapping. Since processing and distribution operations are performed primarily between 3:00 PM and 8:00 AM, these positions will have work schedules during this operational window.

As one of two or three OIEs in the local plant, you will have the opportunity for immediate hands-on implementation of operational improvements in a large mail distribution operation. You will have direct involvement in applying industrial engineering, continuous improvement, Six Sigma and Lean concepts to achieve operational improvements.
A career within the USPS offers excellent professional growth opportunities. OIE positions are a pathway to positions in plant management and other USPS functions.
OIE’s will participate in a structured development program to provide knowledge and understanding of USPS processing and distribution operations.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience in the mailing industry, logistics, and package distribution and delivery operations. There are currently no OIE jobs open for application. We are processing the applications from postings last fall. There will be a large number of OIE postings starting on February 12, 2008.

Our plan is to post all vacancies in the three bi-weekly postings starting in on February 12 and lasting through March 26, 2008. Vacancies are expected to be available in the following locations:
