Scanner A tool used to capture images from photographic print, posters, magazine pages, documents, and others to be manipulated, printed, or stored on a computer. A light beam examines the image by moving across the image as in a flatbed or the page move across the beam as in sheet-fed scanner. The picture can be zoomed in or changed as it is stored using a program such as Adobe's Photoshop product. Alternatively, scanning technology is used for optical character recognition (ORC). An ORC system allows one to take a book or magazine convert to a electronic file and be edit in word processor. There are several different types of scanner.

Flatbed Scanner Like a photocopy machine, the documents are place on a glass board to be scan.

Portable Scanner
It is also called half-page scanners. It can scan 2 to 5 inches at a time. They work well with small pictures or photos but not well with an entire page or graphics.

Sheetfed Scanner
It is also known as a fed-in scanner. Like a fax machines, loose sheets are feed in device to be scanned. The disadvantage is that it can not handle bound document.

Overhead Scanner
It is like overheard projector. A small overhead tower moves across the documents facing up the scanning bed.
