1999 National Engineers Week Festivities

The 1999 celebration of National Engineers Week (N.E.W.) will take place the week of February 21—27, 1999. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to join the activities!

National Engineers Week is the only nationwide celebration of the engi-neering profession. It was established by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951.

The JETS/TEAMS Competition will be held in conjunction with N.E.W. on Wednesday, February 24, 1999, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. This year, we are replacing the traditional Bridge Building Competition with a Trebuchet Competition, which will be held simultaneously with the TEAMS Competition. A trebuchet is a medieval seige engine. If you’d like to learn more about trebuchets or the competition, visit www.cs.wright.edu/people/faculty/jslater/teams/ where you’ll find contest criteria and links to other interesting trebuchet sites.

Some of the College and Wright Engineering Council (WEC) events scheduled for E-Week include:

 an egg drop contest,

 a chili cook-off,

 a CO2-powered car competition,

 a paper airplane contest,

 putt-putt golf holes,

 Midnight Cappuccino,

 and much more.

If you have any suggestions for new activities for N.E.W., please contact Teri Shepherd in 405 Russ, 775-5001. Your interest and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What’s new in Student Government? Currently, SG is working on five goals they set forth at the beginning of Fall Quarter. Those goals are:

  1. eliminating credit card vendors from campus,
  2. instituting a legal service for students,
  3. putting up informational signage,
  4. developing a book co-op, and
  5. establishing special interest housing on campus.

The progress on each of these goals is as follows:

  1. Eliminating credit card vendors is not feasible. However, making each vendor adhere to strict regulations is possible. The best advice is to just walk by any credit card vendor, do not stop, and do not collect your "free" gift.
  2. A proposal is currently being prepared for student legal services, which will go to the president and his "cabinet" for review and, if approved, then to the Board of Trustees. Student legal services will allow a student to have legal representation in a misdemeanor case for a nominal quarterly fee.
  3. Informational signage is complete. However, the ground has to thaw in order for the signs to go up on campus.
  4. The book co-op is still in progress; however, there is an on-line book swap available. To access the book swap visit the SG webpage or ask me for information.
  5. Special interest housing is coming to WSU in fall of 1999. Special interest housing will be available in Forest Lane. It will be open to any group that expresses an interest until the space is filled.

SG is also preparing for next year’s election. Which brings me to my next topic I am seeking individuals interested in running for student government representative for the College of Engineering and Computer Science for 1999/2000. If you have an interest, please contact me so I can get you the necessary information. I can be reached in 163 Russ Center, 775-5031, or by E-mail at huener.2@wright.edu.

If any student in the College of Engineering and Computer Science has a question, comment, or concern that you would like SG to address, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the above number or E-mail address.

Even More 1999 E-Week Event Details

Wright Engineering Council (WEC)

WEC exists to represent the student body of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. It also plans and organizes various student activities and serves as a link for informaton between the College administration and student body. In essence, it is here to serve you! So, if you have any ideas for activities or events that you would like to see happen, let us know so we can get started on it right away.

WEC will be hosting an Egg Drop, Midnight Cappuccino, Penny Wars, Nerd Fashion Show, CO2-powered cars, and the Golf Hole during National Engineers Week. A schedule will be posted outside 163 RC so you can keep track of all the events. Prizes will be awarded at many of the events during the week. We hope lots of people turn out to play our moving miniature golf hole.

If you would like to participate in these events or suggest ideas for future events, stop by 163 RC, call 775-5031 or E-mail us at s002dfh@discover.wright.edu.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)

SAE will be holding a paper airplane competition as part of the upcoming E-week festivities. The rules are quite simple–you will be provided with a packet of materials with which to build your airplane. The materials provided are the only materials that you are permitted to use. You will be given 15-20 minutes to construct your airplane. Models will be launched from the second floor of the Russ Center Atrium. The object is to see who can get the most distance out of their flight. Distance will be judged on a straight line from you to where your airplane lands.

Good luck!

Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

SWE will be hosting a Girl Scout Science Day at the end of National Engineers Week. This meeting is to promote interest in engineering among young women. We are excited to be hosting this annual event for girls between the ages of 10 and 12. This year, we have included a Bridge Building Competition. For more information, contact Tess Wallen at 775-5031.

Dr. Oscar Garcia gave a presentation on ITRI to the Inter-University Council of Ohio.

Dr. Bruce Berra gave a presentation on ITRI to the WSU Board of Trustees.

Leona Miller assisted with the IT Alliance Booth at the annual Infotech Conference sponsored by the Air Force Communications and Electronics Association. ITRI is the research arm of the IT Alliance and was represented at the Conference through the Alliance.

ITRI and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering hosted a Pizza Party for their graduate students to express the administration’s appreciation for all the help these hard-working students provide. About 60 faculty and students took a break from work and study to visit and have some lunch.

Dr. Bruce Berra presented an overview of ITRI to the Dayton Citywide Development IT Task Force.

ITRI sponsored guest speaker Dr. Arif Ghafoor, Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University. Dr. Ghafoor spoke on "Issues in Video Content Analysis and Data Modeling" to a group of faculty and industry representatives.

Dr. Bruce Berra gave a presentation on ITRI at the WSU Foundation Board meeting.

Ty D. Upp says. . . . . .

Throughout the Russ Center, there are several couches, chairs, and tables in various locations. Occassionally, these furnishings are rearranged to accommodate a study group or social gathering.

If your group is responsible for moving or rearranging any of the furnishings in the Russ Center, please be a good citizen and return them to their original location. Furniture left in an inappropriate location can obstruct traffic, impede the mobility impaired, or even be a violation of a fire or safety code.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Scholarship Awarded

Congratulations to Sean Mortara, Mechanical Engineering. Sean has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Board of Directors of the International Gas Turbine Institute, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Wright State University was chosen to receive one of 20 scholarships. Sean was chosen for this award by his fellow students in the ASME Student Section.

Congratulations, Sean, on receiving this scholarship and the affirmation of your peers in ASME student members!
