What do roller coasters and underground subway systems have in common? That is an issue that is explored in the 1999 National Engineers Week, which is scheduled for February 21—27.
The theme for E-Week ‘99 is "Breaking Through: The Creative Engineer." The National Engineers Week Headquarters has established a website for this year’s event at www.eweek.org that is well worth a cybervisit–especially if you are a roller coaster afficionado.
National Engineers Week is the only nationwide celebration of the engineering profession. It was established by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951. Many colleges of engineering use this event to illustrate that there are more to engineers than calculators and pocket protectors.
The College of Engineering and Computer Science Open House is scheduled for the preceding Monday, February 15, from 1—5 p.m.–a day that many high schools are closed in honor of Presidents’ Day. The JETS/TEAMS Competition for area high school students will be held during E-Week on Wednesday, February 24, 1999.
The College and Wright Engineering Council sponsor a number of fun activities during National Engineers Week. Some events, which have taken place during past Engineers Week celebrations include: GATR–the Gathering at the Railing, WEC Golf Scramble, Nerd Competition, Calculator Toss, and Scavenger Hunts. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to join the activities.
Also, any engineering or computer science students who have any suggestions for new activities or events for this celebration or would like to volunteer to help with any of activities, including serving as tour guides for the Open House, please contact Teri Shepherd in 405 Russ Engineering Center, 775-5001. Your interest and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Recent inspections of the Russ Engineering Center have revealed a disappointing increase in graffiti–especially on the dividers of one room in particular. This practice was acceptable in ancient times; however, it is currently considered an infantile pastime.
The administration of the Russ Engineering Center would greatly appreciate it if everyone would please refrain from writing on the walls, desks, chairs, and other furnishings throughout the building.
