The Center for Advanced Friction Studies (CAFS) at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, is currently accepting applications for paid summer internships. The small number of CAFS internships results in an exciting hands-on experience in a modern research facility.

The internships will run from June 14 through August 6 and involve the study of the performance of friction systems, with particular focus on the needs of the aeronautical and automotive industries. Interns will complete a research project based on their strengths and interests while working closely with CAFS scientists and faculty. Areas of current research include: thermophysical properties of materials, structure and compositon influences, evaluation of friction and wear mechanisms, scaling of dynamometer test data, automobile and heavy duty brake systems, property/performance relationships, micro-mechanisms of friction surfaces, formulation of new materials, carbon-carbon composites, transfer layer and third body effects, surface analysis by profilometry, thermal modeling of brake systems, aircraft brake materials, and vibration analysis of brake systems.

To qualify, students must be majoring in engineering or physics; a junior or senior by June, 1999; and have approporiate authorization to work in the U.S. Stipends are $2800 if interns provide their own housing and meals or $2200 if housing and meals are provided to the intern.
