The breadth and depth of disciplines represented in the College of Engineering
and Computer Science ensure that students will find a major that matches their
interests.
Undergraduate Programs
Biomedical Engineering combines engineering design and technology with the
fields of biology and medicine. At WSU, we have two tracks within biomedical
engineering.
- The traditional track is for those that would like to work in an
hospital-related industry developing medical and surgical devices like
prosthetics or artificial organs, working in the area of medical imaging, or
designing rehabilitative technology to assist people.
- We also have a pre-med
track for those that would like to go on to medical, dental, osteopathic, or
veterinary school. This track is very unique since it trains students not only
in the traditional areas of biology and chemistry, but also in up and coming
medical technology. Historically, our students score 10% higher on the MCAT and
have a 10% higher acceptance rate to medical schools.

Computer Engineering deals with all aspects of computer systems including the
design, construction and overall operations with a major focus on hardware. It
includes the study of digital circuits, programming languages, operating
systems, visualization and robotics. Students majoring in computer engineering
now have options in the area of wireless engineering.
- The wireless architecture option concentrates on the design of hardware for wireless networks and devices. This option is for those that are interested in wireless networks, RF electronics, mobile computing, and wireless communications.
- The wireless software option concentrates on the design of software for wireless networks and devices. This option is for those that are interested in Internet security, human-computer interaction, and systems simulation.

Computer Science deals with the software aspects of computer systems including
the study of algorithms and data structures, programming languages, software
methodology and tools, data management and analysis, and artificial
intelligence. Students majoring in computer science can select from three option
areas.
- The business option allows students to have some background in accounting, marketing, finance, and management. This is a great option for students interested in starting their own business.
- The science option allows students to specialize in a scientific area of interest, such as chemistry or physics.
- The bioinformatics option combines experimental molecular biology and biochemistry with computer science concepts. Career areas include forensics, genetics research, drug discovery research and computational biology. We are one of only 20 institutions nationwide that provides training in bioinformatics at the undergraduate level.

Electrical Engineering is a very dynamic and creative branch of the engineering
discipline, which takes energy from fuel cells, solar panels, turbines and moves
or converts it to power things we use daily, like our homes, cars, or cell
phones. Electrical engineers also help transport data and information from
place to place via television, satellite and wireless devices. Students majoring
in computer engineering now have options in the area of wireless engineering.
- The wireless architecture option concentrates on the design of hardware for wireless networks and devices. This option is for those that are interested in wireless networks, RF electronics, mobile computing, and wireless communications.

Engineering Physics is a program that stresses the basic physics that lies
beneath most developments in engineering and the mathematical tools that are
important to all scientists and engineers. This emphasis, combined with the
hands-on experience at Wright State, provides an excellent preparation for a
wide range of careers in industry as well as conceptual research and
development. Study in this field opens the way to several areas, including
lasers, optics, nanotechnology, and nuclear science and engineering. The
engineering physicist is ideally prepared to undertake such problems as
nonpolluting energy sources and new technologies for efficient utilization of
natural resources.

Industrial and Systems Engineering is concerned with figuring out how to make
things work better, more safely, and more economically. Industrial and systems
engineers improve quality and productivity by engineering processes and systems.
Industrial and systems engineers often work in a manufacturing environment and
deal with quality control and the human factors of engineering. Employers
appreciate the better workplace environment for workers along with the money
that the company can save with improvements.

Materials Science and Engineering is increasingly recognized as a key
engineering discipline that enables new developments in advanced technology.
Materials engineers work with ceramics, metals, plastics, and composites to make
them work for us. They develop, change, and use different processes to turn raw
materials into useful substances with desirable properties.

Mechanical Engineering is a discipline encompassing a wide variety of technical
activities. The key element that links the various activities within mechanical
engineering is design. The design function is now largely computer-based and
involves computation, modeling, graphics, and computer-assisted process control.
Mechanical engineers design and develop anything that is a machine - from
fighter jets to toasters.

Graduate Programs
Most courses are offered in the late afternoon to allow practicing engineers or
computer professionals to begin the program on a part-time basis.
Engineering
Engineering is a degree program broad in scope, offering students the
opportunity to concentrate in biomedical, electrical, human factors, materials
science, or mechanical course areas. The program leads to a Master of Science in
Engineering and emphasizes portable concepts in the design and analysis of
complex physical systems such as modeling, synthesis, and optimization, and
provides a bridge for interdisciplinary areas such as control systems and
robotics.
Master of Science in Engineering with a major in...
The Ph.D. in Engineering program incorporates an interdisciplinary core
curriculum. Research areas of focus include:
Computer Science and Engineering
Computer Science and Engineering is a concentration of study in specific areas
of computer science and engineering leading to a Master of Science in Computer
Science or Computer Engineering. The strength of the program lies in the
combination of theory with software and hardware design, and the laboratory
facilities available to the students. The Ph.D. program in computer science and
engineering is open to students with appropriate experience and with degrees in
computer science, computer engineering, or related areas.
Masters Degrees
The Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering has focus areas in:
- Machine Intelligence and Human Computer Interaction
- Database and Software Systems
- Computer Systems and Technologies
- Learning with Disabilities, which
incorporates three interconnected and interdependent research efforts, namely:
understanding the basic biology, nature and development of human abilities,
exploring the opportunities afforded by advanced technologies to expand human
capabilities through multimodal interfaces and enhanced visualizations, and
addressing the practical problems of the design of human-technology systems that
broaden and enhance learning experiences.
