  • Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program

    The Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (SFFP) offers hands-on exposure to Air Force research challenges through eight (8) to twelve (12) week research residencies at participating Air Force Research Facilities for full-time science and engineering faculty at U.S. colleges and universities.

    During the summer, the faculty and their graduate student, under the mentorship of Air Force researchers, will conduct research at Air Force Research Facilities for a continuous period (other than federal holidays and weekends) of eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks. SFFP participants may choose to perform their research at Air Force facilities around the United States, but only in those research areas and with those approved advisors listed on the SFFP website.

    Eligibility (both Faculty and their graduate student)
    • Applicants to the Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (SFFP) must be citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States.
    • Applicants must hold a full-time appointment at a U.S. college or university.
    • Selected fellows and their graduate students are expected to conduct research at an Air Force Research Laboratory Directorate, U.S. Air Force Academy, or the Air Force Institute of Technology, not at their home institution or any other site.

  • NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

    The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,654 graduate fellowships in this competition pending availability of funds. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.

    Awards include 3 years of financial support including $30,000 annual stipend, $10,5000 annual cost-of-education allowance, and $1,000 one-time foreign travel allowance.

  • SMART Scholarships for Undergrad and Grad Students

    SMART LogoThe SMART Program aims to increase the number of scientists and engineers in the Department of Defense (DoD). The program is particularly interested in supporting individuals that demonstrate an aptitude and interest in conducting theoretical and applied research. As such, the program primarily targets "hand-on-the-bench" researchers and engineers.

    Individuals applying to the program should have a strong interest in working for the DoD as a civilian research scientist or engineer.

    SMART scholarship awards include:

    • Annual stipend ranging from $25,000-$41,000 depending on prior educational experience
    • Full tuition and related educational fees at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university
    • Health Insurance
    • $1,000 per year book allowance
    • Internships at DoD laboratories
    • Travel to the summer orientation workshop
    • Post-graduation employment placement as a civilian employee of the DoD

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

    All awardees must be:
    • a U.S. citizen,
    • 18 years of age or older
    • able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories,
    • willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD,
    • a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and,
    • pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in, or closely related to one of the following disciplines: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering; Biosciences; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences; Computer and Computational Sciences; Electrical Engineering; Geosciences; Information Sciences; Materials Science and Engineering; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering; Nuclear Engineering; Oceanography; Operations Research; Physic
    In addition;
    Undergraduate applicants must be currently enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. college or university (i.e. undergraduate applicants must be at least freshman to apply and can apply for funding for their sophomore through senior years only).
    Graduate applicants can be either currently enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or awaiting notification of admission to such. If awaiting admission, you must be accepted for entrance in the Fall 2009 term.
    • Graduate applicants must have taken the GRE within 5 years of the application deadline. Subject tests are not required.
    • You must sit for the GRE General Test before November 2009 to ensure that your scores reach ASEE by the December application deadline.

    HOW TO APPLY

    The SMART online application is open each August through December. The application is currently open and will close December 15, 2009. Awardees will be announced in the spring of 2010 and funding wll begin August 2010.

  • DEED Grant and Internship Opportunities

    The American Public Power Association (APPA) awards students research grants/internships each year to university students as a part of its Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Development (DEED) Program. APPA is the service organization for the nation's community-owned electric utilities. DEED is APPA's research program that funds innovative, energy related research.

    STUDENT RESEARCH GRANTS AND INTERNSHIPS
    • Description: DEED student research grants/internships support students studying in energy-related disciplines, increase awareness of career opportunities in public power, and provide assistance to DEED member utility sponsors. Each year up to ten, $4,000 student research grants and internships are awarded to students conducting research on an energy-related project. Students must be sponsored by a DEED member utility and are required to write an abstract and final report at the completion of the project.
    • Student Eligibility Requirements: Only students studying in energy-related disciplines from accredited colleges or universities in the U.S. or Canada are eligible for student research grants/internships. Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or citizenship. Students must obtain a DEED member sponsor for their student research grant/internship. Find a DEED member utility, and email DEED to request the specific contact information for the utility you wish to approach regarding sponsorship.
    • Applications: The application is available in PDF and in MS Word format. Applications must be completed in full as per the instructions, and submitted with all required signatures and an academic transcript, by the deadline. A copy of the application must also be sent to the DEED regional board director.
    • Deadlines: February 15 and October 15 each year.

    TECHNICAL DESIGN PROJECT (TDP)
    • Description: The DEED technical design project is intended to promote the involvement of students studying in energy-related disciplines in the public power industry. One $5,000 TDP is awarded each year to a student or group of students conducting research on an energy-related project. The award recipient(s) also receive travel reimbursement up to $3000 to present their project during the annual APPA Engineering and Operations Technical Conference. The TDP does not require a utility sponsor.
    • Student Eligibility Requirements: Only students studying in energy-related disciplines from accredited colleges or universities in the U.S. or Canada are eligible. Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or citizenship.
    • Applications: The application is available in PDF and in MS Word format.
