Naval Research Lab Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The NRL Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides approximately forty (40) new postdoctoral appointments per year. Fellows are competitively selected on the basis of their overall qualifications and technical proposals addressing specific areas defined by the host Navy laboratories. The selected participants will work in a unique Navy laboratory environment, while interacting with senior laboratory scientists and engineers.

Eligibility

Citizenship: Opportunities at NRL are open to citizens of the United States and to legal permanent residents.
Security Clearance: It is anticipated that the basic research undertaken by the participants will usually be unclassified, in which case the participants will only need to be processed for a Facility Access Determination (FAD) if their sponsor verifies their need to work outside normal duty hours. For some laboratories, a DoD security clearance at "Secret" level may be required to gain access to research facilities, in which case participation in the program is contingent upon the participants obtaining the proper clearance. Security clearance and access requirements vary from laboratory to laboratory. Please check with the laboratory program coordinator.
Education and Experience: Before appointment, participants must present evidence of having received the Ph.D., Sc.D., or other earned research doctoral degree recognized in U.S. academic circles as equivalent to the Ph.D. within seven years of the date of application, or must present acceptable evidence of having completed all formal academic requirements for one of these degrees.
Prior Fellowships: A person who has received a prior postdoctoral fellowship at a navy laboratory under any program may not be eligible to participate in the NRL Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the same laboratory.
Equal Opportunity: In accordance with Federal statutes and regulations and Navy policies, no person on the grounds of race, color, age, sex, national origin or disability shall be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under, any program or activity receiving financial assistance from the U.S. Navy.

Deadline: Applications are accepted and processed on an on-going basis. To apply to the fellowship program, visit http://www.asee.org/fellowships/nrl/apply.cfm

2009-2010 DAGSI Research Fellowship applications due December 15

Fellowships are awarded for research-based doctoral study in the school of engineering at a DAGSI member institution. Awards are highly competitive and based on merit. Alignment of research interests with technology focus areas defined as critical to the southwest Ohio region and/or the state of Ohio will be a factor in the award decision. Specifically, these areas are: advanced materials and manufacturing; aerospace engineering; clean and renewable energy; biomedical engineering; information technology and advanced data management; instruments, controls, and electronics, including sensor technologies; and power and propulsion.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must have at least a B.S. degree in engineering or a related field, earned or expected prior to doctoral program enrollment. An M.S. degree in hand at the start of the Fellowship is preferred.

Fellows holding a B.S. only will receive a stipend of $21,000 until coursework for 45 credits (AFIT, WSU) or 30 credits (UD) has been completed. Then the stipend will rise to $28,000 for the remainder of the students' three-year fellowship.
Fellows holding a M.S. at the start of their fellowship program will receive a stipend of $28,000.

Applicants should have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5.

DAGSI Fellows must be eligible for employment at a federal institution. Therefore, DAGSI Research Fellowships are open only to individuals who, at the time of application, are citizens or nationals of the United States.

DAGSI Research Fellowships are intended for new doctoral students not currently or previously enrolled in a Ph.D. program at any academic institution, including the DAGSI member schools (AFIT, UD, WSU).

DAGSI Fellows may not hold full-time employment in addition to the fellowship. Any student employed outside of this fellowship must be sure he or she does not violate any university or employer restrictions on employment while receiving a stipend for research (e.g., some universities limit the number of outside employment hours for full-time students receiving fellowship stipends; some employers prohibit receiving a stipend if the employee is being paid a salary). Any violation of policy will result in termination of the fellowship unless the student makes a change that ensures compliance with all university, DAGSI, and employer rules.

Childcare scholarship available for CECS Students

Undergraduate students facing childcare expenses are invited to apply for the SCARF Scholarship.

The deadline is September 03, 2008, so please do not delay. Awards of $50 per week per child may be made to five students.

Society for Childcare Assistance/Relief (SCARF) Scholarship Information

Purpose
Childcare issues present challenges to undergraduate students in every discipline but are particularly taxing for students who are enrolled in the rigorous science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree programs. However, as studies have concluded that the United States is losing its technological edge, these are the students who need timely graduations. The Society for Childcare Assistance/Relief (SCARF) scholarship program, endowed by John O. and Janet E. Miller, aims at helping address childcare costs for undergraduate STEM students who have dependent children living with them. Wright State University (WSU), Dayton, Ohio is the pilot site for this program starting the school year of 2008-2009.

Support Provided
The 2008-2009 program will provide scholarship awards for WSU undergraduate STEM students of $50/week each for childcare costs during actual 2008-2009 school term weeks. Five scholarships will be awarded at all times so if one recipient graduates, another recipient may be awarded. Payment will be made directly to the student at the beginning of each quarter for the quarter. Continuation of the award between terms will be determined on a case-by-case basis considering: the length of break between actual class sessions; childcare arrangements, and opportunities for the student to mentor or internship in their field during breaks. Feedback from awardees will be required as input to future scholarship program design. The scholarship is
renewable, subject to availability.

Eligibility
Applicants must fit the following criteria:
