Congratulations to Dr. Haibo Dong on his NSF CAREER award!

The College of Engineering and Computer Science is proud to announce that Dr. Haibo Dong, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, has won a National Science Foundation CAREER award. His project, "CAREER: An Integrated Study of Biological Fluid Dynamics in Nature," will examine the biological fluid dynamics in freely flying animals through an integrated computational and experimental approach. Due to the small size and fast motion of insect wings and the wings of small animals, it has been nearly impossible to study the 3D-wing deformation during flapping and aerodynamic maneuvers. To make this study possible, two sets of techniques, composed of measurement and computational flow simulation/analysis, are currently being developed. Equipped with such tools and advancements, it is now possible to reveal the mysteries surrounding complex flight dynamics and the fundamental physics behind insect and small animal flight.

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is the National Science Foundation's most prestigious award in support of junior faculty. It is given to those who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

Congratulations to Dr. Dong for this outstanding accomplishment!

SAE Aero Design Team

The Wright State University SAE Aero Design team came in 10th place overall in the Regular Class competition in Atlanta, Georgia. While at the contest, they made three successful flights on Saturday, April 30. On the last flight of the day, the aircraft crashed due to unknown reasons. The team waited for approximately two hours before they could retrieve their aircraft from the field. They began the rebuilding process at approximately 7:00 p.m., and completed the process at 4:30 a.m. The team arrived back at the flying field from the hotel at 8:00 a.m., and completed another successful flight.

During the last flight of the contest on Sunday, the team "went for broke" in terms of attempting to lift the maximum predicted payload. The airplane successfully took off in under 200 feet, made the first turn, but then descended over a pond, crashing at the far end of the pond on the bank. It is believed that the elevated temperature of the plume of air immediately above the pond reduced the lift from the wings as well as the thrust from the propeller, thereby causing the airplane to slowly sink. The WSU team was given a Second Place Award for Design for their well-written design report. The team was comprised of the following mechanical engineering students:

Alex Feist
Zack Hafner
Kris Johnson
Ben Pifher
Matt Pifher
Alex Prenger
Keith Schaeffer
Ryan Sinnamon

Videos of all of the flights of the WSU team's airplane is given on the homepage of their advisor, Dr. Scott K. Thomas:

http://www.cs.wright.edu/people/faculty/sthomas/saeaero11.html

If you are participating in Commencement on November 20 at the Nutter Center please see the following website for information: http://wright.edu/commencement including where to line up and where your respective group is sitting.

All CECS Grads will line-up in the McLin Gym before the ceremony. You may want to advise your friends and families to sit in sections 223, 222 or 221, if you are a Ph.D. candidate or BS candidate; Master students will be seated closer to 202 and 203.

The doors usually open to the public at 8:30am and the actual ceremony begins at 10:00am. I advise you that the EARLIER you arrive the better, all students should plan to be inside the Nutter Center and checked in at their line-up area by 9:00. Please advise your families that parking at the Nutter Center may mean lots of walking and possibly taking a shuttle bus to the doors. Once inside there are lots of steps that can be problematic for some guests! So it is a good idea for families and guests to arrive an hour early also!

The November ceremony usually lasts approximately 2 hours.

Attire: Keepsake caps and gowns are available in the Bookstore. The gowns are black for graduate students and green for undergraduate. Candidates for graduation are required to wear the appropriate academic attire (cap, gown, and hood, if applicable) to participate in the ceremony. Students receiving graduate degrees wear BLACK tassels; undergraduate students from CECS wear ORANGE tassels, with the exception of our computer science students who wear YELLOW tassels. Please unpackage your robe and press it with the iron as it will be very creased!!

Undergraduate students with outstanding academic records are recognized at commencement. Get your Latin Honors Cords at the Office of Conference and Events (next to the WSU Bookstore.. Three distinctions are noted:

For Students First Enrolled PRIOR to Fall 2006:
- Summa Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.8
- Magna Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6
- Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4

For Students First Enrolled DURING or POST Fall 2006:
- Summa Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.9
- Magna Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.7
- Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5

Students who have successfully completed one of the curricular tracks in the University Honors Program receive an Honors medallion. The Obligation is a creed similar to the Hippocratic Oath taken by medical graduates and which sets forth an ethical code. It is the formal statement of an engineer's responsibilities to the public and to the profession; the Obligation is publicly accepted by an engineer during induction at a Ring Ceremony.

During this ceremony, the new member accepts the Obligation of the Engineer - a lifelong commitment - and is presented with a stainless steel ring. The ring, worn on the little finger of the engineer's working hand, symbolizes the unity of the profession in benefiting mankind and serves to remind the engineer of the professional ethics and moral conduct to which she or he is committed.

You are welcome to invite family and friends to this ceremony where participants will take the oath to uphold devotion to the standards and dignity of the engineering profession. The Order is the roster of engineers in the United States who have participated in an Engineers' Ring Ceremony and who have publicly accepted the "Obligation of an Engineer".

The purpose of the Order is to foster a spirit of pride, individual integrity and responsibility in the engineering profession; to bridge the gap between education and practice; and to present the public with a visible symbol identifying the engineer.
As an engineer, you will make decisions that directly impact people's lives. The Oath of Obligation affirms the professional ethical responsibility you commit to uphold, symbolized by the steel band you wear on the small finger of your working hand. The Order of the Engineer, Inc. is a symbolic organization that seeks to promote professionalism among engineers and graduates of accredited engineering college programs. Students from our college who are graduating in June and August will be inducted.

Graduation Line Up Information and Info for Parents and Guests

If you are participating in Commencement on June 12 at the Nutter Center please see the following website for information: http://wright.edu/commencement. Please see the attachment which shows where in the McLin Gym your group is lining up before the ceremony. Also note where each group will be sitting out in the main arena (so your families can sit where they can see you if they like!)

The doors usually open to the public at 8:30am and the actual ceremony begins at 10:00am. I advise you that the EARLIER you arrive the better, all students should plan to be inside the Nutter Center and checked in at their line-up area by 8:45. Please advise your families that parking at the Nutter Center may mean lots of walking and possibly taking a shuttle bus to the doors. Once inside there are lots of steps that can be problematic for some guests! So it is a good idea for families and guests to arrive an hour early also!

The June ceremony usually lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Attire: Keepsake caps and gowns will be available in the Bookstore through June 11.

Summa Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.8
Magna Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6
Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4
For Students First Enrolled DURING or POST Fall 2006:
Summa Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.9
Magna Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.7
Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5
Students who have successfully completed one of the curricular tracks in the University Honors Program receive an Honors medallion. Please contact the Honors Office for more information about the medallion.

Diplomas You will receive a diploma cover during the commencement ceremony if you are graduating during the current quarter. Official diplomas and transcripts will be sent to the mailing address on file with the Registrar's Office <http://www.wright.edu/registrar/> once all final

Congratulations on your upcoming degree!!

Cindy Oakley, Student Affairs Manager
College of Engineering and Computer Science

Please do not miss the deadline!
Special note for Ph.D candidates: All orders for Ph.D. attire, whether rental or purchase, must be placed with the WSU Bookstore by May 14, 2010.

The ceremony is held at the Ervin J. Nutter Center <http://www.nuttercenter.com/> . The doors usually open to the public at 8:30 am and the actual ceremony begins at 10:00am. The June ceremony lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes
Attire: Latin Honor cords will be available on Tuesday May 18 from the Office of Event Services (which is located next to the WSU Bookstore) by showing your student i.d.
For Students First Enrolled PRIOR to Fall 2006:
Summa Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.8
Magna Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6
Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4
For Students First Enrolled DURING or POST Fall 2006:
Summa Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.9
Magna Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.7
Cum Laude indicates a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5
Candidates for graduation are required to wear the appropriate academic attire (cap, gown, and hood, if applicable) to participate in the ceremony. COMPUTER SCIENCE students wear YELLOW tassels while all other CECS undergraduate majors wear ORANGE tassels.
Students who have successfully completed one of the curricular tracks in the University Honors Program receive an Honors medallion. Please contact the Honors Office for more information about the medallion.

Graduation Supplies, caps and gowns etc are available in The WSU Bookstore <http://wright.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BNCBHomePage?storeId=30557&catalogId=10001&langId=-1> including invitation cards, banners, gifts, etc. Graduation announcements and class rings may be ordered online at balfour.com <http://www.balfour.com/> . To ensure availability and correct fit, you are encouraged to purchase yours early. Ph.D. candidates/graduates may also purchase regalia. All orders for Ph.D. attire, whether rental or purchase, must be placed with the WSU Bookstore by May 14, 2010.

Tickets The determination as to whether tickets are required for admission into a graduation ceremony is based solely on the total number of eligible students who specifically register to participate online. Since the Spring (June) commencement is the traditional quarter of graduation at Wright State, the number of eligible candidates is much greater than those for the Fall ceremony. As such, it may be necessary, due to fire code regulations, to require seating tickets for each person entering the Ervin J. Nutter Center for the June ceremony. In order to keep the graduation exercises open to as many family and friends as possible, Wright State University is not able to make this determination until after the deadline has passed for online registration to participate in the ceremony. Generally, tickets are not required if fewer than 1,300 students sign up to participate.

Congratulations to all CECS students earning degrees!

How do I sign up?:
Sign up by sending an e-mail to housing@wright.edu before February 5, 2010. The subject line should say "ECS House", with the name and UID of the resident. Residents who want to fill an entire four bedroom unit should include the names of the other residents in their e-mail, and those students should send their own e-mail with preferred roommates as well, to ensure that roommate group members are mutual selections. Groups of four students who draw entire apartments will be given priority in the assignment process.

What about Room Selection?
Students in this program will skip Room Selection, however residents must come to Residence Services to make a pre-payment by April 1, 2010 to complete their application, like everyone else, and choose their apartment from those that will be allocated for the program. All apartments will be assigned according to the time and date of the completion of the application (first come, first served). If you have any questions, please contact us Toll-Free at 1-866-WSU-HOME (1-866-978-4663) or e-mail at housing@wright.edu.

Any remaining spaces in this building that are still open after February 5, 2010 may be filled during Room Selection on a first come, first served basis by other students. We will consolidate assignments to encourage and support the success of the primary group in the building via programming and other activities focused on their academic interests and related topics.

The program, which started in 1993, offers freshmen an opportunity to have 20 hours of math refresher before the start of fall quarter. The program uses CECS professors and students leaders to not only give students a jump-start on math for the school year but also help them make a successful transition from high school to college. Instructors for the program included Mike Ondrasek (CSE), Ron Taylor (CSE), Travis Doom (CSE), and Nate Klingbeil (MME). The College also tries to incorporate current students into the program by allowing them to be student leaders for the week. They help the participants in math problem sessions but also organize the optional evening activities which are geared around helping the students to get to know each other and make friends before the quarter begins. Student leaders for the program were Amanda Adkins, Ben Ausdenmoore, Nick Baine, Samantha Crossen, Jenny Davis, Joy Davis, George Diehl, Tom Haller, Mike Huth, David Neff, Jade O'Mara, Holly Zelnio, and Heather Zumstein.

He currently serves as an assistant professor of electrical engineering at Central Michigan University. He began the project as a way to teach his students the ways that engineering can be used to help people. It allowed the students to see and understand how they can take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-world situations.

The Smart Cane is equipped with Radio Frequency Identification and is one of the first outdoor applications of RFID technology.
Garringer completes Summer Institute at Bryn Mawr College

Jenny Garringer, marketing manager in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Wright State University (WSU), recently graduated from the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute, held June 20-July 15 at Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The Summer Institute, a 34-year partnership between Bryn Mawr College and Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) is the premier residential professional development program dedicated to advancing women leaders in higher education administration.

The 49 participants selected for this year's Summer Institute represented 34 institutions in the US, as well a delegate from Micronesia. The participants included vice presidents, vice provosts, as well as deans, directors, chairs and faculty members. Each participant brought a wide range of experiences across disciplines and institution types and sizes to the program, which created a unique environment where they could learn from each other while discussing critical issues facing higher education today.

Responding to the current environment for higher education globally, the Summer Institute had a special focus this year on "Women's Leadership in Times of Crisis: Leveraging Our Responses for Institutional Renewal." Over 50 senior officers from colleges and universities, national organizations, and accrediting associations - many HERS alumnae or board members - served as faculty. A notable faculty member at the Summer Institute was Dr. Marvalene Hughes, President of Dillard University in New Orleans, who the discussed her experience leading Dillard through profound transformation following the $400 million devastation it suffered at the hands of Hurricane Katrina. The Summer Institute also included a trip to Temple University to discuss strategic planning in the current economic environment and a trip to the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington, DC where the group learned about the national perspective on the new environment for higher education as well as resources for institutional response and renewal.

Garringer has been at WSU since 2000. She manages the marketing and recruitment initiatives for the College of Engineering and Computer Science in an effort to increase student enrollment in engineering and computer science degree programs. She received her bachelor’s degree in marketing as well as an MBA from the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University.

WSU President David Hopkins sponsored her participation in the 2009 HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute. She was selected to represent Wright State through a process facilitated by the Women's Center on campus. Garringer is the eighteenth woman from Wright State selected to attend since they began sending representatives in 1986.

Call for Abstracts
5th Annual Dayton Engineering Sciences Symposium
October 26, 2009

Sponsored by the Dayton Section of ASME, the symposium is designed to facilitate communication between members of the regional technical community, as well as to provide a forum for students, both undergraduate and graduate, and researchers/practitioners to present their work.

The symposium program will include several parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon, a luncheon, an industry exhibition, and a Keynote Address. Presentations are limited to 20 minutes, including time for questions. No written paper is required. The Dayton Section of ASME will confer "Best Presentation" awards at the annual Section Awards Banquet in late Spring, 2010.

Dr. Jay Baron, president and chief executive officer for the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), and director of CAR's Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology group will give the Keynote Address. The automotive industry is confronted with manufacturing challenges like never before. Markets are fragmenting, production volumes cyclical, and demand is shifting away from large vehicles to smaller less-profitable ones. Legislative pressures to significantly increase fuel economy call for a host of new technologies involving power train, electric motors, and new, light-weight materials. Manufacturers are deploying flexible manufacturing systems to cope with lower volumes and future uncertainty. What business and manufacturing strategies from today will continue into the future and what new ones will emerge? This address will provide an overview of these issues and suggest what the future holds for automotive manufacturing.

http://www.cs.wright.edu/~asme/DESS.htm

Paper co-authored by Drs. Doom and Raymer cited in supreme court ruling

WSU professors Travis Doom (CSE), Michael Raymer (CSE), and Dan Krane (BIO) were co-authors of a paper recently cited by Justice Samuel Alito in a written opinion of the United States Supreme Court. Drs. Doom, Krane, and Raymer have authored numerous papers on the analysis and interpretation of forensic DNA evidence in criminal cases.

In 2002, the three WSU professors co-founded the company Forensic Bioinformatics Services, Inc. (FBS) along with collaborators from academia and industry, and with the help of a Technology Transfer grant from the Wright State University. Since that time, FBS has reviewed DNA evidence in cases across the nation and throughout the world. In the case DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FOR THE THIRD JUDICIAL DISTRICT ET AL. v. OSBORNE, Justice Alito cites a 2003 paper co-authored by Drs. Doom, Krane, and Raymer to support the idea that the extreme sensitivity of modern DNA tests make forensic DNA evidence highly susceptible to contamination.

New MME Courses for Spring Quarter

ME 890-02 CRN 33788 Materials for Nano-technology -- Dr. Sharmila Mukhopadhyay (TR 2:15-3:55)

The possible impact of nanotechnology in future products and services cannot be overemphasized. This has led to significant increase in demand for expertise in this area. However, as with any rapidly evolving high-impact area, the information available is spread across multiple disciplines.

Open to graduate students in Engineering and Science, UG seniors with GPA 3.0 or higher. Prerequisites are undergraduate Math and Science for Engineering majors. To register, please contact the instructor (sharmila.mukhopadhyay@wright.edu). This course is an approved technical elective for undergraduate MME students. For graduate MME students, this is an approved 700 level course.

ME 890-03 CRN 33789 Advanced Mechanics of Solids II – Dr. Nathan Klingbeil (MW 4:10-5:50)

The purpose of this course is to provide the necessary background required for graduate students to reasonably pursue research activities in the general area of solid mechanics. The course builds on the elasticity background provided in ME 720, and will include both advanced topics in elasticity as well as an introduction to classical small-strain elastoplasticity.

Open to graduate students. Prerequisites are ME 720 and ME 612 or equivalent. This is an approved 700 level course for graduate MME students.

ME 890-04 CRN 33790 Hydrogen Energy – Dr. Amir Farajian (MW 4:10-5:50 pm)

Access to renewable and clean sources of energy is one of the highest priorities among scientific and technological challenges in 21st century. The conventional sources of energy, in particular carbon-based sources, have limited reserves and pollute the environment with catastrophic consequences for the whole planet.

Open to graduate students in Engineering and Science. Prerequisites are ME 316 or ME 375. This is a required core for the new Renewable and Clean Energy Masters program, and an approved 700 level course for other tracts.
