A total of 85 incoming students participated in the College's Academic Advantage Program (AAP), August 23-28. The program, which started in 1993, offers freshmen an opportunity to have 20 hours of math refresher before the start of fall quarter. The program uses CECS professors and students leaders to not only give students a jump-start on math for the school year but also help them make a successful transition from high school to college. Instructors for the program included Mike Ondrasek (CSE), Ron Taylor (CSE), Travis Doom (CSE), and Nate Klingbeil (MME). The College also tries to incorporate current students into the program by allowing them to be student leaders for the week. They help the participants in math problem sessions but also organize the optional evening activities which are geared around helping the students to get to know each other and make friends before the quarter begins. Student leaders for the program were Amanda Adkins, Ben Ausdenmoore, Nick Baine, Samantha Crossen, Jenny Davis, Joy Davis, George Diehl, Tom Haller, Mike Huth, David Neff, Jade O'Mara, Holly Zelnio, and Heather Zumstein.

Garringer completes Summer Institute at Bryn Mawr College

Jenny Garringer, marketing manager in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Wright State University (WSU), recently graduated from the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute, held June 20-July 15 at Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The Summer Institute, a 34-year partnership between Bryn Mawr College and Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) is the premier residential professional development program dedicated to advancing women leaders in higher education administration.

The 49 participants selected for this year's Summer Institute represented 34 institutions in the US, as well a delegate from Micronesia. The participants included vice presidents, vice provosts, as well as deans, directors, chairs and faculty members. Each participant brought a wide range of experiences across disciplines and institution types and sizes to the program, which created a unique environment where they could learn from each other while discussing critical issues facing higher education today.

Responding to the current environment for higher education globally, the Summer Institute had a special focus this year on "Women's Leadership in Times of Crisis: Leveraging Our Responses for Institutional Renewal." Over 50 senior officers from colleges and universities, national organizations, and accrediting associations - many HERS alumnae or board members - served as faculty. A notable faculty member at the Summer Institute was Dr. Marvalene Hughes, President of Dillard University in New Orleans, who the discussed her experience leading Dillard through profound transformation following the $400 million devastation it suffered at the hands of Hurricane Katrina. The Summer Institute also included a trip to Temple University to discuss strategic planning in the current economic environment and a trip to the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington, DC where the group learned about the national perspective on the new environment for higher education as well as resources for institutional response and renewal.

Garringer has been at WSU since 2000. She manages the marketing and recruitment initiatives for the College of Engineering and Computer Science in an effort to increase student enrollment in engineering and computer science degree programs. She received her bachelor’s degree in marketing as well as an MBA from the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University.

WSU President David Hopkins sponsored her participation in the 2009 HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute. She was selected to represent Wright State through a process facilitated by the Women's Center on campus. Garringer is the eighteenth woman from Wright State selected to attend since they began sending representatives in 1986.

Call for Abstracts
5th Annual Dayton Engineering Sciences Symposium
October 26, 2009

Sponsored by the Dayton Section of ASME, the symposium is designed to facilitate communication between members of the regional technical community, as well as to provide a forum for students, both undergraduate and graduate, and researchers/practitioners to present their work.

The symposium program will include several parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon, a luncheon, an industry exhibition, and a Keynote Address. Presentations are limited to 20 minutes, including time for questions. No written paper is required. The Dayton Section of ASME will confer "Best Presentation" awards at the annual Section Awards Banquet in late Spring, 2010.

Dr. Jay Baron, president and chief executive officer for the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), and director of CAR's Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology group will give the Keynote Address. The automotive industry is confronted with manufacturing challenges like never before. Markets are fragmenting, production volumes cyclical, and demand is shifting away from large vehicles to smaller less-profitable ones. Legislative pressures to significantly increase fuel economy call for a host of new technologies involving power train, electric motors, and new, light-weight materials. Manufacturers are deploying flexible manufacturing systems to cope with lower volumes and future uncertainty. What business and manufacturing strategies from today will continue into the future and what new ones will emerge? This address will provide an overview of these issues and suggest what the future holds for automotive manufacturing.

http://www.cs.wright.edu/~asme/DESS.htm

Paper co-authored by Drs. Doom and Raymer cited in supreme court ruling

WSU professors Travis Doom (CSE), Michael Raymer (CSE), and Dan Krane (BIO) were co-authors of a paper recently cited by Justice Samuel Alito in a written opinion of the United States Supreme Court. Drs. Doom, Krane, and Raymer have authored numerous papers on the analysis and interpretation of forensic DNA evidence in criminal cases.

In 2002, the three WSU professors co-founded the company Forensic Bioinformatics Services, Inc. (FBS) along with collaborators from academia and industry, and with the help of a Technology Transfer grant from the Wright State University. Since that time, FBS has reviewed DNA evidence in cases across the nation and throughout the world. In the case DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FOR THE THIRD JUDICIAL DISTRICT ET AL. v. OSBORNE, Justice Alito cites a 2003 paper co-authored by Drs. Doom, Krane, and Raymer to support the idea that the extreme sensitivity of modern DNA tests make forensic DNA evidence highly susceptible to contamination.

ODNR Partners with Wright State and daytaOhio on Oil Technology Project

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Geological Survey has formed a partnership with Wright State University and daytaOhio to undertake geological research that could play a significant role in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and the improvement of oil extraction from oil fields.

This project will utilize the sophisticated Appenzeller Visualization Lab and seismic interpretation technologies managed by daytaOhio. The partnership will allow for use of the latest computer technologies in geological mapping, modeling and visualization, which will improve the processing and analysis of geologic and seismic data. The state will use the technology to assist in analyzing oil field data to determine the efficacy of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in specific Ohio reservoirs.

"Our partnership with Wright State and daytaOhio will provide additional expertise and technological tools to help identify sites where EOR is practicable," said Larry Wickstrom, chief of the Ohio Geological Survey. Noting that there are several new, large-scale energy projects planned for Ohio that could produce large quantities of pure carbon dioxide, Wickstrom emphasized that "Ohio is looking for ways to use the carbon dioxide byproduct to make existing oil fields more productive and profitable, while safely securing the carbon dioxide in the deep subsurface."

The current partnership is part of a grant through the U.S. Department of Energy with Ohio River Clean Fuels. The Division of Geological Survey hopes to expand into further work with Wright State and daytaOhio in the future.

WSU to offer Ohio's first master's degree in renewable energy

Companies in Ohio are applauding the state's first master's program in clean and renewable energy approved by Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut.

Wright State University, the University of Dayton, Central State University, the Air Force Institute of Technology and the Dayton Area Graduate Studies Institute will join forces to start the two-year program. Students can enroll in the program on a full-time or part-time basis. Courses will be taught by faculty from the four institutions, and students will earn a degree from either UD or Wright State. Enrollment in the program could start as early as January and the first graduates out in the workforce in 2010.

The program will operate within Wright State University's mechanical and materials engineering department and the University of Dayton's mechanical and aerospace engineering department. Students will receive a UD or a Wright State degree, depending where they enroll. The Air Force Institute of Technology and Central State University also will offer classes and instructors but will not grant degrees. Classes will focus on development of energy-reducing design techniques, renewable energy and manufacturing systems, and better forms of solar energy, fuel cells and biofuels.

Besides developing more engineers, the partners say the program is designed to help address the need for stable, clean and economical energy sources. The program also is in line with the state of Ohio's interest in research within Ohio's Third Frontier Project and the University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio.

The four institutions hope to provide a future engineering workforce for the more than 45 existing Ohio companies with a stake in renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as graduates who can start new businesses to create new Ohio jobs.

James Menart, professor of materials and mechanical engineering at Wright State, and Kevin Hallinan, chair of UD's mechanical and aerospace engineering department, proposed the program to the Ohio Board of Regents. Both will direct the new program and teach classes at their respective institutions.

"It is very important that we start educating our next generation of engineers in how to power our society, other than through the use of fossil fuels," Menart said. "The United States has to develop a renewable and clean energy structure to grow its economy. This program is important to the future of Ohio's economy as it will produce tomorrow's trained workforce."

Potential students include professionals looking to upgrade their skills, undergraduate engineering majors, current engineering graduate students and international students. Other engineering majors can also benefit by taking the program's courses as electives, bringing renewable energy to related engineering disciplines.

Klingbeil awarded $2 million NSF grant for engineering mathematics education

The National Science Foundation awarded Wright State a $2 million grant for helping 15 colleges and universities around the country assess and adopt our successful engineering mathematics reform model. This model helps eliminate the bottleneck that occurs during the first year in a traditional engineering curriculum.

Dr. Nathan Klingbeil (MME) leads the research on "A National Model for Engineering Mathematics Education." Co-principal investigators are Dr. Kuldip Rattan (EE), Dr. Michael Raymer (CSE), Dr. David Reynolds (BIE), and Dr. Richard Mercer (Math).

The model, now in its third phase, helped restructure our engineering mathematics curriculum, radically changing the way that math is taught to engineering students in an effort to improve retention and graduation. It delivers the math in a just-in-time method and includes distilled math topics that the students will cover later in the curriculum. The model began with a new freshman-level introductory engineering math course, EGR 101, taught by engineering faculty. Students are exposed to how they can apply math concepts to solve real-world engineering problems.

ISE Alum Receives U.S. Patent

Steve Sepeck (BSISE '07) recently received a U.S. patent for his "One-hand Operation Conversion Kit for Wheelbarrow Handles."

United States Patent 7,434,818

The idea came to Sepeck while he was helping his father build an addition to the family deck. Injured in a motocross accident ten years ago, Sepeck can no longer use his left arm and was frustrated that he could only watch his father fill the wheelbarrow. Sepeck's determination to maintain his independence led him to research more adaptable wheelbarrows. When his search revealed no practical pre-existing designs, he devised the idea for the conversion kit.

The kit is designed for attachment on a two-wheeled wheelbarrow, which has a decent center of gravity. Cross supports are attached to the existing handles and a new cylindrical handle is inserted through holes in the center of the supports. The cross members are designed to eliminate major torque from the handle. Sepeck also added an ergonomic grip and a second handle design for better control with unbalanced loads.

"This invention will help people with physical disabilities get back to doing things they love," says Sepeck. His hard work and exhaustive research helped him overcome his disability and has driven him to continue inventing. Steve is currently pursuing a master's degree in human factors engineering at Wright State.

Congratulations Steve!!

CECS awards CARS scholarships

Twenty-four of the region's best and brightest high school graduates are working side-by-side with college professors performing research while getting ahead on their engineering degrees. These talented students are the newest recipients of the College Achievement and Research Scholarship (CARS) awarded by Wright State University's College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Now in its second year, the CARS program awards incoming students with a high school GPA of at least 3.33 and a high score on the ACT or SAT with $2,500 and a special research opportunity. The award supplements any other academic or honors scholarships that the students receive.

"Perhaps more important than the scholarship amount is the hands-on experience offered by this program," said Cindy Oakley, student affairs manager of the college.

"Freshmen in the CARS program spend their first year exploring research that our faculty are involved with and developing a feel for what projects and opportunities exist for undergraduate researchers," said Oakley. Each sophomore then works on a research project with a faculty mentor. Current topics include medical imaging for cancer surgeries and reading devices for the blind, among others. Students can take advantage of Wright State's numerous labs, or facilities at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Sophisticated experiments with lasers and plasma are just a part of the daily agenda for Jared Speltz, a second-year CARS student and an engineering physics major. Speltz and the 14 other CARS sophomores are joined this year by the 24 new freshmen.

"This is a chance for me to get a head start on my career," said Speltz who aspires to work for WPAFB or NASA.

2008 Dean's Award Recipients

At the College's annual Awards and Recognition Ceremony held on June 13, 2008, two students were selected to receive the Dean's Award. When appropriate the Dean's Award is given to a person who excels in academics, leadership, and service to the College. This year we had two students who exemplified all three of these characteristics.

Mike Jonell (ME) is an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the College. He has served as President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Tau Beta Pi. Under this his leadership, Tau Beta Pi received several awards at the College’s 1st Annual Student Leadership Banquet, including awards for best social event for their BBQ at the Bent, best fundraiser for their Pi-a-Prof event held during National Engineers Week, and the award for outstanding club. Mike has attended several district and regional conferences and was on a team captain for our AeroDesign team. He is always willing to help, whether it is staffing a booth at TechFest, or judging science fairs, or being the team captain for the College’s Relay for Life team…we can always count on him to help us out with tons of energy and enthusiasm.

Leroy Long (ME) has also demonstrated outstanding academic leadership and dedication to the college and the community. In addition to being a person that the College can count on, he consistently helps at College recruitment and alumni events and does an outstanding job. He relates very well with prospective students and their families and is always willing to jump into a busy situation and take charge whether that means welcoming visitors to campus, directing them to specific locations or answering questions they may have…he jumps in and gets the job done. Leroy has also been involved in the Dean’s Leadership Institute, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, INROADS, and the National Society of Black Engineers. Even with all of these activities, Leroy still found time to volunteer for MATHCOUNTS, the House of Bread, and the YMCA, all while maintaining a high GPA and co-oping at Toyota. Leroy is a selfless individual who goes out of his way to help others and serves as a great role model for other students.

New joint research center opened with AFRL

Wright State University and the Air Force Research Laboratory have formed the Center for Advanced Power and Energy Conversion, the first laboratory jointly operated by Wright State and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The 1,300-square-foot lab is already operating with four sets of experiments going on at the moment. Plasma - basically an ionized or highly charged gas - is usually researched in a low-pressure zone. In the new lab, it will be researched and used in ordinary, atmospheric pressure conditions.

Plasma can be used to clean paint, etch a surface or test the aerodynamic properties of airplanes, but a particularly promising application can be found in the biomedical field. Plasma can actually be used in the disinfection, clean-up, or sterilization for some medical applications. Using plasma, the work can be done leaving no residue so it's a an environmentally sound procedure.

A CECS student team, made up of students Timothy Cormier (MME), Benjamin Florkey (MME), and Pritish Khale (MME), submitted a proposal to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) to develop a leaf vacuum which could serve as a replacement for the backpack leaf blowers currently used by commercial gardeners. The main areas of concern about leaf blowers are noise levels, the engine exhaust emissions, and the re-suspension of dust.

WSU was 1 of 5 universities chosen to compete in the second round of the design competition. Now that their proposal was chosen, the team, advised by Dr. Junghsen Lieh (MME), will construct a working prototype unit. The five completed prototypes will be demonstrated before a panel of judges at AQMD and a winning design will be selected. The top prize is $40,000.

The High Altitude Balloon team had a successful launch on Sunday, May 4, 2008. The purpose of the launch was to test a Tube Deployment Experiment at near space atmosphere. The launch took place in Portland, Indiana and was recovered by the Shelby County Sheriff's office.

The experiment goal was to deploy a shape memory polymer tube in a near space environment. It was launched in a folded state, of approximately 2 feet in length, to approximately 63,000 feet where it partially deployed by providing power to heating elements attached to the inside of the tube. Complete deployment, however, was not obtained due to premature burst of the balloon.

Aero Design Team wins 1st Place Award for Best Design

Two teams of mechanical engineering seniors from Wright State University were led by their advisor, Professor Scott K. Thomas, to participate in the SAE Aero Design East Competition in Kennesaw, Georgia, over the third weekend in April. This international competition draws university teams from all over the United States, as well as Brazil, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Canada, Poland and India.

The Aero Design Competition challenges engineering students to conceive, design, model, fabricate and test a radio-controlled aircraft that can take off and land while carrying the maximum payload weight. This gives students the opportunity to apply the knowledge obtained in the classroom to a practical problem in system design. In the analysis of their aircraft, numerous trade-off studies were completed in order to optimize the design. In addition to the flight portion of the competition, the students put their professional communication skills to work by submitting a formal design report and by giving a ten-minute presentation to a group of four highly qualified judges from the aerospace industry.

The WSU micro class team consisted of eight students from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, and their team name was Dark Wing Ducks. The micro class competition required that the team develop an aircraft that can fit into a box of a given size, which can be assembled in less than three minutes, which was demonstrated during the presentation portion of the contest.

The regular class team (team name ITSEZ), which had seven students from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, was required to use a 60-size glow engine, and the aircraft size was limited to 175 linear inches. In other words, the wingspan plus the nose-to-tail length plus the maximum height above the ground had to be less than 175 inches.

Results
The WSU micro class team won the first place award for the Best Design. This award is given to the team that has the highest combined score for the design report and the presentation. The micro class team came in eighth place out of twelve in the overall competition, and the regular class team placed tenth out of thirty-nine teams. SAE International is the premier engineering society that services professionals in the aerospace and automotive engineering fields.
WSU has been competing in the Aero Design Competition since 2003 and our teams have brought home awards several times over the years.

Dr. Farajian (MME) helps develop new way to assess nanocage capacity for hydrogen storage

Dr. Amir Farajian, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, co-authored "Fullerene Nanocage Capacity for Hydrogen Storage" which appeared on the March 2008 cover of the American Chemical Society's journal Nano Letters. Nano Letters is a journal dedicated to nanoscience and nanotechnology. Farajian, co-authored the article with Dr. Boris Yakobson and Olga Pupysheva while he was a postdoctoral researcher at Rice University.

Scientists have long argued the merits of storing hydrogen in tiny, molecular containers like buckyballs, and experiments have shown that it's possible to store small volumes of hydrogen inside buckyballs. The new research presented in this article offers the first method of precisely calculating how much hydrogen a buckyball can hold before breaking.

Using a computer model, the research team tracked the strength of each atomic bond in a buckyball and simulated what happened to the bonds as more hydrogen atoms were packed inside. The model promises to be particularly useful because it is scalable, that is it can calculate exactly how much hydrogen a buckyball of any given size can hold, and it can also tell scientists how overstuffed buckyballs burst open and release their cargo. If a feasible way to produce hydrogen-filled buckyballs is developed, Yakobson said, it might be possible to store them as a powder.

The Department of Energy has devoted more than $1 billion to developing technologies for hydrogen-powered automobiles, including technologies to cost-effectively store hydrogen for use in cars. Hydrogen is the lightest element in the universe, and it is very difficult to store in bulk. For hydrogen cars to be competitive with gasoline-powered cars, they need a comparable range and a reasonably compact fuel system. It's estimated that a hydrogen-powered car with a suitable range will require a storage system with densities greater than those found in pure, liquid hydrogen.

The research was supported by the Office of Naval Research and the Department of Energy.

New Security Procedures for Russ and Joshi Centers Effective March 31

Effective with the start of spring quarter on Monday, March 31, 2008, new security procedures will be implemented for access to the Russ and Joshi Centers to increase personal and building security. The public access doors will be locked in both buildings according to the schedule listed below. The public access doors in Russ are the two main doors located in the lobby. The public access doors in Joshi are the two main doors located on the west side of the building on the 1st and 2nd floors and the smaller door located on the north side in the stairwell between the 2nd floor and the 1st floor.

The Student Union public access doors and the tunnel from the Student Union to the main campus are presently being locked according to the same schedule. Because the tunnel from Joshi to the Student Union must remain open as required by fire code, this action to lock the Russ and Joshi public access doors will effectively isolate the Student Union and the Russ and Joshi Centers from the rest of the campus.

The two main lobby doors in Russ and the three public access doors in Joshi will be locked and unlocked on the following schedule:

OPENED: 7:00 a.m. M-F, 8:00 a.m. Sat, 10:00 a.m. Sunday
LOCKED: 11:00 p.m. every day

Holidays will be on a Sunday schedule.

The Student Union building managers will provide this service for the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

During the times the buildings are locked, access will be available by using the card swipe located at the south lobby main door to Russ. Faculty, staff, and students (who are registered for a CECS course) should have card swipe access. This is the only card swipe access point at this time.

It will be very important to become familiar with these procedures and remember to carry your Wright 1 Card with you at all times, especially if you will need access to Russ or Joshi when the buildings are locked. There will be no other way to gain access to these buildings when they are locked.

<img src="http://www.engineering.wright.edu/graphics/Grandhi_TANA.jpg" alt="Dr. Grandhi receiving the award from two members of the Indian Parliament in July, 2007." width="225"align="left" style="padding:10px" />

The Telugu Association of North America (TANA) presented Dr. Ramana Grandhi (MME) with the TANA Award for Excellence in Engineering. The award was presented in July 2007 at TANA’s 16th conference, held in Washington, DC. Former President Bill Clinton gave the keynote address.

Dr. Grandhi received the award in recognition of both his achievements in engineering and his efforts to promote Telegu culture. Telugu is the native language spoken by people originating from Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Grandhi’s home state in the southeast of India. There are close to half a million Telegu speakers in North America, and a significant percentage of them work in engineering and other technical fields.

One of Dr. Grandhi’s major accomplishments has been the development of Two-point Adaptive Nonlinear Approximations, which he affectionately named TANA, to effectively represent the physical behavior of aerospace and automotive structures. These surrogate models reduce computationally expensive simulations associated with multidisciplinary design requirements. TANA has been incorporated into software used in industry by such firms as GE and Caterpillar and by Sandia National Laboratories.

The WSU AutoMow team, made up of 11 students, competed in the Institute of Navigation's (ION) Annual Autonomous Lawn Mower Competition held at Wright State, May 31-June 2, 2007. The WSU team was the first to successfully qualify in the competition. During a test on Friday afternoon, the mower appeared to suffer a fatal failure when smoke rolled out of the vents on the robot. An electrical fire in the rear of the robot seemed to spell disaster, but the team scrambled to move the robot into the lab where the problem was identified and fixed within the hour, getting them back into the competition. On Saturday, the mower completed its best run. It mowed over 95% of the field and did not impact the moving obstacle on the field. The WSU MOWBOT was the only robot that did not hit the obstacle or require a restart, and it completed the course in the fastest time, winning first place.

The WSU team consisted of Nicholas Baine, Dan Berkowitz, Kyle Bryan, Danny Cain, Johannes Cilliers, D.J. Ennist, Terry Kolakowski, Alex Rowe, Adam Wannemacher, and Eric Weber. Advisors: Dr. John Gallagher, Dr. Kuldip Rattan, Dr. Scott Thomas, Mark Arlinghaus, and Arunesh Roy.

Nicholas Baine selected as CECS Top Scholar

Each year, the WSU Parents Association and the Friends of the Libraries honor top graduating seniors in each college. Nicholas Baine (EE) was selected this year as the Top Scholar for CECS. He was honored at a reception held Saturday, May 19, 2007, in the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library. He holds the book purchased by the WSU Parents Association in his name for addition to the WSU Libraries' collections, "Dielectric Resonator Antenna Handbook" by Aldo Petosa.

Nicholas Baine's demonstrated intellectual ability is nothing short of spectacular, and his academic performance at Wright State has truly been superior. He received the President's Scholar Award, a Valedictorian Scholarship, and an SAE merit scholarship. He is carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA in electrical engineering and will graduate with a BSEE degree in June 2007.

Just consider his track record in service. When local schools needed a science fair judge, Nicholas stepped forward and volunteered. When COSI on Wheels needed help, it was Nicholas who stepped forward and volunteered. When the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Educational Outreach program needed a "Mr. Wizard," it was Nicholas who volunteered. When the engineering college's scholarship committee needed a student to work closely with faculty members in deciding who gets scholarships and for how much money, it was Nicholas who volunteered. Time and again, it was Nicholas who saw the need and stepped forward to help.

It's no wonder then that he was elected and served with distinction as Tau Beta Pi's president, that he was an active member of the Ad-hoc Math Solutions Committee, that he was a very effective AAP Student Leader, and that he worked tirelessly in the freshman mentoring program. And if that were not enough, he also served as Treasurer for Wright State chapter of IEEE, he tutored math for new students, and he planned and then helped facilitate the Wright Engineering Council's Fall Retreat. He also spearheaded various other activities such as the Egg Drop Competition and the IEEE Halo Tournament. Repeatedly, throughout his undergraduate years, he has stepped forward and served with honor, dedication, and distinction.

Nicholas has been selected as a DAGSI Fellow next year, when he begins his graduate study for a Ph.D. in Engineering. He already has substantial "real world" experience under his belt. For example, he works for the Air Force Research Laboratory's Materials Directorate, where he helps engineer space-age coatings for various high-performance applications. Nicholas is also responsible for doing laboratory automation and instrumentation for Air Force scientists and is responsible for developing and integrating control systems to make them more user-friendly. In fact, because of his outstanding performance at AFRL, he recently received his base contractor's Award of Excellence.

SAE Aero Design Teams bring home top honors

Eight CECS students competed in the SAE Aero Design East Competition held May 4-6, 2007 in Fort Worth, Texas. The students competed in both the Regular Class and the Micro Class by designing and constructing remote-controlled aircraft within the competition's requirements. In the competition, the teams must successfully take-off, complete a 360-degree course, and land while carrying the highest payload possible.

Micro Class Team Brings Home 1st Place

In the first round, the Micro Class team flew their aircraft into a 25 mph headwind, turned gracefully 180 degrees to travel the length of the runway, and then turned again into the wind. At this point, the plane disintegrated spectacularly in mid-air, which resulted in the Micro team winning the "Best Crash" Team Award. With a flight score of zero, they stood in seventh place out of eleven competitors based on their scores for the design report and the oral presentation. Undaunted, they simply retrieved their best backup plane (one of three), instrumented it, did a pre-flight check of all of the servos, and flew it in the next round. They catapulted into first place with a score of 161, with the nearest competitor a close second at 158 points. In Round 3, the Raiderwing team flew their aircraft again to boost their score to 166.8 points, which proved to be the highest overall score of the Micro Class, thus earning them a First Place finish.

Regular Class Team Places 6th Out of 51 Teams

The Regular Class team achieved a sixth-place finish out of 51 competitors at this year's competition. Their first flight was flawless, in which they were required to fly their plane with no payload in very heavy winds (20 mph sustained, 30 mph gusts). This netted a 10 point empty payload bonus score. On their second flight, they loaded the plane with 14 pounds. The takeoff was perfect, but during climb-out, they experienced a malfunction that resulted in a devastating crash in the parking lot between two parked cars. At this point, they were in 20th place in the contest. They went back to the hotel and assembled their backup plane. After a full night of work (and about one hour of sleep), they returned on Sunday to lift 19 pounds, which was one pound over their maximum predicted payload.

Micro Class Team: Ryan Milligan, Steve Palluconi, Michael Graman, Dwight King
