Paper co-authored by Drs. Doom and Raymer cited in supreme court ruling
WSU professors Travis Doom (CSE), Michael Raymer (CSE), and Dan Krane (BIO) were co-authors of a paper recently cited by Justice Samuel Alito in a written opinion of the United States Supreme Court. Drs. Doom, Krane, and Raymer have authored numerous papers on the analysis and interpretation of forensic DNA evidence in criminal cases.
In 2002, the three WSU professors co-founded the company Forensic Bioinformatics Services, Inc. (FBS) along with collaborators from academia and industry, and with the help of a Technology Transfer grant from the Wright State University. Since that time, FBS has reviewed DNA evidence in cases across the nation and throughout the world. In the case DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FOR THE THIRD JUDICIAL DISTRICT ET AL. v. OSBORNE, Justice Alito cites a 2003 paper co-authored by Drs. Doom, Krane, and Raymer to support the idea that the extreme sensitivity of modern DNA tests make forensic DNA evidence highly susceptible to contamination.
