Girls Ready to Explore Engineering Now (GREEN)
July 22-25, 2008
The GREEN Program is full for 2008; please
check back for future GREEN Program dates.
The GREEN Program is a fun-filled 4-day residential camp for rising 7th,
8th, and 9th grade girls. Campers will experience engineering in the
real world and the academic world through interesting design projects,
tours, interactive activities and much, much more! Girls will be
supervised 24-hours a day by current engineering students, trained in
CPR and First Aid, as well as staff from the College of Engineering and
Computer Science.
Here are some of the fun things participants did during the 2007 camp:
- Work with your peers to create a sea vessel made completely out of
cardboard! Test your invention when you 'float your boat in the moat' during
the competition on the last day of camp.
- Visit and tour a Dayton-area engineering plant, where you will get to
experience what real life engineers do on a daily basis.
- Experience Gary Broadbent Boomerangs, a one-hour program that discusses
the history, science, craft, hobby, sport, art and competition of
boomerangs.
- Hear from professional woman engineers. They will share their
experiences and energize you to think of a career in engineering, math or
science.
- Work in pairs to biopsy a tumor! See advances in medical imaging that
aid in diagnosis and less invasive procedures. Put your skills to the text
when you biopsy a tumor out of Jello.
- Create a container that will protect a chip as it travels through the
mail. See if your container was a success once you return home from
camp.
- Construct a parachute that won't drop its precious cargo as it makes a
two-story fall. Design, construct and test your contraption.
- Have fun with new friends during 'Late Night with CREC.' Swim in the
pool, participate in sporting activities or just relax in the Student Union
after a hard days work!
- Create an ice cream sundae masterpiece while closely following
directions. Then enjoy your creation while watching a movie.
- Participate in laboratory demonstrations from Wright State University
faculty and students.
- Understand the workings of an audio transmitter to communicate across
the room.
- Make new friends, experience a college residence hall, discover
engineering and find out what interests YOU!
The GREEN Program cost is $250, and includes housing, linens, meals, and
supplies. The camp is limited to 10 participants from each grade level.
Space will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration forms and
payment must be received by July 1, 2008.
Some scholarship funding is available for the GREEN Program. If you are
interested in a full or partial scholarship please include a brief
statement with your application. The statement should include level of
need, how the scholarship will benefit the student and why the student
needs the scholarship funding.
