Peer Instructors Needed for UVC 101 - Apply by April 2nd (posted 04 Mar 2010)
UVC 101 Peer Instructor Positions Available
Fall 2010
Position Description
Peer Instructors are important paraprofessional staff members of Wright State University who teach UVC 101: First Year Seminar I (a.k.a. "Freshman Seminar") for new students as part of the Learning Communities Program at WSU. Peer Instructors are students who serve as teachers, role models, sources of information for new students, and representatives of WSU. This position enables students to develop valuable skills in communication, teaching, leadership, organization, and creativity. The compensation for this position is $8.15 per hour, and students can expect to earn about $600 for their teaching and related duties during Fall Quarter.
The University College expects to hire about 50 well-qualified students to serve as UVC 101 Peer Instructors for Fall 2010. Training, resources, a master syllabus, supervision and mentoring will be provided. Peer Instructors will carry full instructor responsibilities for a single section of UVC101; they will not have co-teachers.

Qualifications
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher after Winter Quarter 2010. (Strongly Preferred: 3.0 + cum. GPA).
- Have earned at least 60 quarter hours of undergraduate credit after Winter Qtr 2010.
- Have been a WSU student for at least two quarters. (Preferred: 5 quarters).
- Be in good standing with the Offices of Residence Services & Judicial Affairs, including having never been convicted of a felony. A Peer Instructor job offer is contingent on the return of a clean background check.
- Demonstrate an ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
- Have a real interest in assisting new students with their adjustment to college.
- Demonstrate skills in communication, teaching, leadership, and organization - especially facilitating discussions. (Preferred: prior experience in working with groups/clubs, or teaching, coaching, or serving as a First Weekend Peer Leader.)
- Have a thorough knowledge of or demonstrated desire to learn about Wright State University.
Specific Duties
- Participate in Peer Instructor 2009 Training Sessions: (Put these on your calendar!)
- Session I: 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Friday, May 28 (required of all PIs)
- Session II: 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday, June 4 (required of all PIs)
- Session III: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Friday, June 11 (required of all PIs)
- Session IV: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Friday, July 16 (required of only new PIs)
- Session V: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Friday, Aug. 6 (required of only new PIs)
- Session VI: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Wednesday, Aug. 25 (required of all PIs, except RAs)
- Attend a Peer Instructor Supervision Seminar & Staff Meeting weekly during fall qtr. (choose Monday 4:00-4:50 pm, Tuesday 3:10-4:00 pm, Thursday 9:00-9:50 am, or Friday 10:00-10:50 am).
- In consultation with the Director of Learning Communities (DLC), develop a syllabus for your section of UVC 101 following the guidelines and UVC 101 Master Syllabus given in training. This includes arranging guest speakers.
- Teach one section of UVC 101 which meets twice a week. This includes facilitating activities & discussions on various college success and adjustment topics, including diversity education, time management, campus resources, & academic success skills.
- Incorporate the common reading, the LC text & supplement, and the Course Studio Homepage into the class in a meaningful way.
- Plan and lead special events for your learning community as appropriate and in consultation with the DLC. This will include at least three out-of-class events.
- Grade student journals, quizzes, homework assignments and exams.
- Keep accurate records of student attendance and assignments.
- Complete & submit online Student Employment timesheets to the DLC on time.
- Hold a weekly "office hour" in 003 UH for students (+ to consult with peers & DLC).
- Check your WSU email daily during the week and your Course Studio Course Homepage weekly during the fall quarter.
- Distribute all required evaluations to students at the end of the term.
- Administer the common final exam during finals week, grade it, and conduct an item analysis on the students' exam responses for the DLC. Turn in all exam copies.
- Submit official student grades online by the given due date.
- Participate in an end-of-term evaluation of the Peer Instructor program with the DLC: this meeting is held during Finals Week at an open exam slot.
UVC 101 Peer Instructor Application Process
First, pick up a UVC 101 Peer Instructor Application Form in 003 University Hall. Complete the form and follow the directions for writing your statement.
Your statement will serve as an indication of your skill in written communication.
The application form will ask you to provide the names and phone numbers of two references, at least one of whom is a WSU faculty or staff member.
For first consideration, submit your completed application form and statement of interest to Catherine Queener, Director of Learning Communities, University College, 003 University Hall, by April 2, 2010. Late applications may be accepted through the end of April if it appears that not all positions can be filled from the initial pool of candidates.
Well-qualified applicants will be invited to interview, starting in March.
The hiring decision and assignment of a UVC 101 section will take place in mid-May as candidates register for fall classes. UVC 101 Peer Instructors will complete paper work required by Student Employment during Session I of Peer Instructor training.

The Guardian needs a web editor for spring 2010. The web editor is in charge of maintenance, upkeep and development for The Guardian’s website. The Guardian’s web editor must be organized, flexible and willing to adapt to a changing newspaper environment. Spring and summer co-ops available at Emerson (posted 18 Feb 2010)
The co-op/internship program has been reinstated at Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc. They have a limited number of positions beginning in March and continuing on into the summer.
They are asking all interested students to apply on their website for these openings. There are some postings up now, and the rest should be posted this week - probably a few new ones every day.

Co-op positions at IST International (posted 18 Feb 2010)
We are currently considering hiring a couple of co-op students to aide us in organizing and implementing business systems in support of our TQM system. We are looking for individuals that have an interest in engineering (either electrical or mechanical) IT, or business. While the main focus of the position is in support of bringing our business systems under tighter control, there is a great learning potential in areas of electronic and mechanical engineering, software development, industrial engineering, systems administration, and accounting.
The position would require an individual that could aid in reviewing, preparing and entering documentation and records with technical content. This would involve the review and preparation of drawings, bills of material, process instructions and related test and quality records. As we are a small company, everyone is expected to wear multiple hats. In addition to the primary job description, individuals would be expected to participate in other areas of the production environment as need and talent would dictate.

Department of Commerce Internship (posted 11 Feb 2010)
Internship Program for Postsecondary Students
The Department of Commerce (DOC) has announced the availability of internships during Summer 2010 Session in its Internship Program for Postsecondary Students*. These internships offer opportunities to participants for hands-on education and training related to the their fields of interest and those of the DOC. Selected applicants will intern for 10 weeks beginning as early as 31 May 2010 or as late as 21 June 2010. Internships require either part time (20 hours per week) or full time (40 hours per week).
Internships will be available in the Washington, D.C metro area; however, some internships might be available at DOC Offices and Bureaus in other locations. ORISE will accept applications for Summer 2010 through March 2010.
Disciplines of Interest
Examples include the following: business; life, health, and medical sciences; communications and graphic design; computer science; physical sciences; communications and graphic design; mathematics; and international relations.
Benefits:
Undergraduate interns receive a weekly stipend of $500; graduate interns receive $600. In addition, both undergraduate and graduate interns receive a $150 weekly housing allowance, plus limited travel reimbursement and accidental medical expense coverage.
