PDF files can be viewed on any of the engineering UNIX machines using
acroread. The postscript files can be viewed on some of the machines using
gs (at least kiwi. Try different machines. gs is not the same on all of them)
and printed to russ1 in 152 RC (or russ3 in room 348). Use the command lpr
-Pruss1 filename to print to russ1 (one of the printers on the first floor
of Russ in the compter lab) for postscript (.ps) files. Both file types will
be saved when you select their links. You must go to your UNIX command prompt
to view or print them. You can use ps2pdf filename to convert ps files into
pdf. You can print directly from within acroread.
PDF files can be viewed on your home machine if you download and install
a FREE copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader, available from http://www.adobe.com.
PostScript files can be viewed on your home machine if you download and install
ghostscript/ghostview or another related package at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html
(ftp://wave1m.nrl.navy.mil/pub/mac/gs/ for Macs).
Note: Often students have difficulting downloading and viewing files because
they have run out of space. NetScape does NOT give an error message when
you are out of space. It will create an empty file with the same name as
the file you are downloading. If a file cannot be viewed or printed, type
the command :
ls -l
and look at the size of the file. If it's size is near zero, it's empty.
Type:
quota
to see how much disk space you have left. If you have near zero disk space
left, you need to delete some files, including the empty files, and try the
download again.
