The dynamometer controller uses a potentiometer (the round black knob) to change the amount of braking that is applied to the engine. The top readout shows the dynamometer rotational speed, the next readout shows the torque in ft-lbf, and the white analog gage shows the amperage that is being applied to the electromagnetic coils. These coils induce eddy-currents in the spinning disks which retard the motion.
