If you need financial support, you have several options to explore. Keep in mind that many funding programs make their awards on a yearly basis, so it is best to begin the application process early and pay attention to application deadlines.
A limited number of graduate assistantship positions are available each year. As a graduate assistant, you must devote a minimum of 20 hours a week to assistantship responsibilities and maintain full-time graduate status. Graduate assistants receive a stipend as well as a tuition scholarship. Normally, graduate assistants receive appointments for three quarters, beginning in the fall.
There are two basic types of assistantships: research assistantships and teaching assistantships.
Research Assistantships
Faculty members who need assistance for funded research programs often look for qualified research assistants to help in their research. In return, the student researchers receive tuition remission and annual stipends of varying amounts. The best way to obtain a research assistantship is to contact faculty members in your field of study to ask about current opportunities. For a list of of faculty members for each research focus area, please go to our Research page.
Teaching Assistantships
Teaching assistantships are generally offered through the appropriate department of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Teaching assistantships are available on a competitive basis for students in the program who have established strong academic credentials and can demonstrate good communication and teaching skills. You must apply well in advance to receive a teaching assistantship. For more information, contact the appropriate department.
