CEG 333: Introduction to Unix Prabhaker Mateti Logging in

Before a user can do anything on Unix, he or she must be logged in with a user name and password. Once logged in, a shell is opened, and the user may type any command, or "startx" to open a graphical environment.

Things to remember:

• Everything is case-sensitive and must be typed exactly ("ceg33335" is not the same as "CEG33335"!).
• "Control-D" is the standard key for logging out of a shell or any command that expects input (like ftp).
• In the OSIS lab (and often elsewhere) it's necessary to log out twice when running the graphical environment: once to quit X, and again to actually log out of the original shell.
