The lab is accessible to students enrolled in CEG 433, CEG 434, CEG 429
Internet Security, CEG 730 and CEG 830. We have near-zero man-power support
for the lab. It is being setup by volunteer faculty and students.
Student Accounts: Students have individual accounts, but with NO archival
of their files. They are expected to store their files on a Zip disk, or FTP
etc.
It was a goal of ours that each PC be usable as a typical Unix workstation
even when the LAN is down. A side-effect is that your login + passwd
are separately maintained each machine. passwd changing is disabled.
During the Network Security lab sessions (lasting a few hours at a time),
some PCs (about 10) will be accessible only to CEG 429 students.
Within this lab (429 RC), we are running a 100 Mb/s LAN. There is a
Linux-based router/firewall through which we access the rest of the College,
WSU, and Internet.
Access to the lab PCs via modem is not available.
Maintenance: We need to keep the machines up-to-date in terms of new
releases, and security bug fixes. This also needs TA support.
To expose the student to "alternate" OS and open source phenomena is an
explicit goal of this Lab.
