Thomas A. Sudkamp

Professor Emeritus

I am currently Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the Ohio Department of Higher Education. The Academic Affairs division is responsible for authorization of institutions of higher education to operate in the State of Ohio, approval of degrees and programs, transfer and articulation policies, and statewide student success initiatives.

Prior to holding this position, I served as Executive Director of the Ohio Strong Start to Finish program, a collaboration of 30 public Ohio colleges and universities with the goal of increasing the number of students who complete gateway mathematics and English courses in their first year through guided degree pathways, developmental education reform, and enhanced advising and student support services.

I retired from Wright State University in 2019 having been a faculty member and served as Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies, Dean of the University College, Vice President for Curriculum and Instruction, and Provost. I also served three terms as Wright State University Faculty President.

My research interests have included approximate reasoning, artificial intelligence, and mathematical logic.  Current interests are in the application of soft computing techniques for modeling and decision making in complex problem domains, machine learning, and knowledge discovery.

I am an area editor Fuzzy Sets and Systems.  I have served as associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics and the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, an area editor for the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, and a member of the editorial board of The International Journal of Computational Intelligence.  I also served as president of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (NAFIPS) and vice president of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA).
